How to use this counter

  1. Paste or type your text — counts refresh on every keystroke, no button to press.
  2. Set the limit if the field you're filling has a maximum (160 for old-school SMS, 280 for X, 1500 for a bio) — the status line tracks what's left.
  3. Read the right column: use “No spaces” when a form ignores whitespace, “Characters” when it counts everything.
  4. Copy Stats puts the full breakdown on your clipboard for later.

Useful information

Character limits are everywhere: social bios, form fields, meta descriptions, SMS messages. Each platform counts slightly differently — some include spaces, some don't — which is why this tool shows both numbers side by side.

The six counts

Characters includes spaces and line breaks. No spaces strips all whitespace. Words splits on whitespace. Lines counts every line break plus one. Letters and Digits break the text down further — useful for validating usernames, codes and PINs.

Emoji and accents

Counts here are JavaScript string length: an emoji made of several code units (like many with skin tones) can count as more than one character. If a platform counts “grapheme clusters” instead, tiny differences can appear — the totals here are the same ones text.length gives you in code.

Tips for tight limits

Cut filler words first (“actually”, “just”, “really”), then redundant context your audience already knows. Punctuation and spaces are usually worth keeping — readability matters more than squeezing in one extra word.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference from the Word Counter?

This tool is built around character limits: it counts characters (with and without spaces), letters and digits, and shows exactly how many characters you have left against a target. The Word Counter focuses on words, sentences, paragraphs and reading time instead.

Does the character count include spaces?

Characters counts everything typed, including spaces and line breaks. No spaces strips all whitespace first — that's usually the number application forms care about.

How does the limit helper work?

Type the maximum allowed characters into the limit field. The line below the counts then shows how many you have left, or how many you're over by once you pass it.

Are line breaks counted?

Yes — each line break counts as one character in the Characters total, and the Lines column counts every line including the current one.

Is my text stored anywhere?

No. Counting happens entirely in your browser as you type — your text is never sent to a server or saved by Jivora.
