Useful information

EMI stands for Equated Monthly Instalment — the fixed amount you pay each month until the loan is cleared. Every payment covers part of the borrowed amount (principal) and part of the interest charged by the lender.

The formula behind your EMI

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)ⁿ ÷ ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1), where P is the loan amount, r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and n is the number of monthly instalments. If the rate is 0%, the EMI is simply P ÷ n.

Why total interest surprises people

Longer tenures lower the monthly payment but increase the total interest — sometimes dramatically. Comparing the bar above for a 5-year and a 15-year term on the same loan makes the trade-off obvious in one glance.

Getting a more accurate picture

Bank schedules can include processing fees, insurance or rate changes on floating-rate loans. Add those on top of these figures, and if your rate is floating, recalculate whenever the rate changes.

Frequently asked questions

How is EMI calculated?

EMI uses the formula P × r × (1 + r)ⁿ ÷ ((1 + r)ⁿ − 1), where P is the loan amount, r is the monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and n is the number of monthly instalments.

What happens if the interest rate is 0%?

With a 0% rate the EMI is simply the loan amount divided by the number of instalments — you pay back exactly what you borrowed with no interest.

Does a longer tenure reduce my EMI?

Yes — spreading payments over more months lowers the monthly EMI, but you pay more interest in total. The breakdown bar shows how much of your repayment is interest.

Is this EMI figure exactly what my bank will charge?

It is an estimate. Banks may add processing fees, insurance or rate changes (for floating-rate loans), so treat this as a planning figure rather than an official schedule.

Is my loan data stored by Jivora?

No. The calculation runs in your browser — the loan amount, rate and tenure are never sent anywhere or saved.
