Image Compressor
Shrink JPG, PNG and WebP photos with a quality slider and see the before/after sizes side by side — all inside your browser, with no upload and no watermark.
Compress an image
Nothing leaves your deviceChoose an image above — the original and compressed sizes will appear here, ready to download.
How to use this image compressor
- Pick an image. Drag a JPG, PNG or WebP file onto the dropzone, or click it and choose a file from your device.
- Adjust quality. The slider runs from 30% (smallest) to 95% (highest fidelity). 80% is the sweet spot for photos. You can also cap the width for extra savings.
- Compare the result. The tool shows both images side by side with their file sizes and the percentage saved. If compressing would make the file larger, it tells you instead of hiding it.
- Download. Press Download to save the smaller file, or change the settings to re-compress the same image automatically.
Useful information
Image compression removes data you are unlikely to notice — subtle colour variations and fine detail your eyes skip — so the file gets dramatically smaller. It is the fastest way to fix slow pages, full storage and upload limits.
Lossy vs lossless
JPG and WebP use lossy compression: quality below 100% discards some detail permanently, in exchange for size. PNG is lossless: every pixel survives, so PNG files rarely shrink when re-encoded — which is why this tool also tries WebP for PNG uploads and keeps whichever result is smaller.
Choosing a quality level
For photos, 80% usually looks identical to the original at roughly a quarter of the size. Drop to 60–70% for thumbnails and social images, and stay at 90% or above for product shots or anything with fine text.
Resize for the biggest wins
A 4000-px-wide photo displayed at 800 px is carrying five times the data it needs. Capping the width to your actual display size often saves more than the quality slider alone.
Privacy: every step — reading, resizing and encoding — happens on your device using an off-screen canvas. There is no server in the middle, so your photos are never transmitted or stored.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The image is read and re-encoded directly in your browser using a canvas. The file never leaves your device — you can disconnect from the internet and it still works.
Which image formats are supported?
JPG, PNG and WebP. GIF and SVG files are rejected because re-encoding them would lose animation or vector quality.
What quality setting should I use?
Around 80% is the sweet spot for photos — visually near-identical at a fraction of the size. Use 60–70% for smaller files and 90%+ when fine detail matters.
Why did a PNG get bigger?
PNG is lossless, so re-encoding it as PNG rarely shrinks it — unless the image has large flat areas. For photos saved as PNG, converting to JPG or WebP gives much better savings, and the tool automatically picks the smaller result for you.
Is my photo stored anywhere?
No. Everything happens in the browser tab; the compressed copy is created in memory and downloaded straight to your device. Nothing is saved or logged by Jivora.
