How to use this timer
- Set your block. Type a length between 1 and 180 minutes, or tap one of the presets (15 / 25 / 45 / 60).
- Press Start. The countdown begins immediately and the progress bar fills as you work.
- Stay with it. Pause any time with the same button; the remaining time holds exactly where you left it.
- Finish and repeat. A chime sounds at zero, the session is counted, and you can start the next block right away.
Useful information
A study timer works because it turns a vague intention (“I should study”) into a concrete, bounded commitment. When the end time is visible, it's much easier to resist checking your phone — the break is already scheduled.
Choosing a block length
Start with 25 minutes if you're easily distracted, 45–50 if you can hold focus, and 90 for deep work on a good day. The right length is the longest one you can finish without drifting — if you're constantly watching the clock, go shorter.
Accurate even in the background
The timer stores your end time rather than counting ticks, so a throttled background tab won't lose seconds. When you come back, the display catches up to real time. The trade-off: it only works while the page is open — there's no push notification, so pair it with the audible chime.
One block vs cycles
This tool runs a single block of any length. If you prefer the classic work/break rhythm — 25 minutes on, 5 off, long break after four rounds — use the Pomodoro Timer instead.
Privacy: sessions, counts and times never leave the tab. Refresh the page and the counter starts fresh.
Frequently asked questions
How does the study timer work?
Choose how many minutes you want to focus for, press Start, and the timer counts down with a progress bar. A soft chime plays when the block ends.
Does the timer keep running in the background?
The countdown is based on your device clock, so it stays accurate even if the browser throttles the tab. It only runs while this page is open — there is no push notification.
Can I change the session length?
Yes — anywhere from 1 to 180 minutes. You can edit the length while the timer is idle, and Reset always returns it to the value you set.
What is the difference from a Pomodoro timer?
The Study Timer runs one block of any length. The Pomodoro Timer runs classic 25/5 cycles with automatic breaks and a long break every four sessions.
Is my session history stored?
No. The completed-session counter lives only in this tab and disappears when you refresh or close the page — nothing is saved or uploaded.
