How to use this word counter
- Type or paste your text. Drop an essay, a blog draft, a tweet or any text straight into the box — the counts refresh on every keystroke.
- Read the six stats. Words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs and estimated reading time are shown together.
- Watch character limits. Use the “No spaces” figure when a form counts only letters and punctuation, and “Characters” for limits that count everything.
- Copy or clear. Copy Stats puts the full breakdown on your clipboard; Clear empties the box so you can start fresh.
Useful information
A word counter is one of those small tools you reach for constantly: finishing an essay with a word limit, trimming a bio to fit a profile, or checking whether a caption is too long. Jivora counts as you type, so there is no button to press and nothing to upload.
How words are counted
A word is any run of characters separated by spaces or line breaks. “hello world” is two words, and extra spaces between words are ignored — so pasted text with messy spacing still counts correctly.
Characters with and without spaces
The Characters figure counts every keystroke, including spaces and line breaks. No spaces strips whitespace first, which is what many application forms and username fields actually limit.
Sentences and paragraphs
Each block ending in a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis counts as one sentence. Paragraphs are blocks separated by a blank line — so press Enter twice to start a new paragraph.
Reading time uses an average pace of 200 words per minute, which is a common estimate for non-fiction prose. Technical or dense text usually takes longer; light, conversational text usually takes less.
Frequently asked questions
How does the word counter count words?
Words are groups of characters separated by spaces or line breaks, so “hello world” counts as two words. Leading and trailing spaces are ignored.
Does it count characters with or without spaces?
Both. Characters counts everything you type, including spaces and line breaks, while Characters (no spaces) counts only letters, numbers and punctuation.
How is reading time calculated?
Using an average reading speed of 200 words per minute. Short texts are rounded to seconds and longer texts to whole minutes.
What counts as a sentence or a paragraph?
A sentence is each block of text ending with a full stop, question mark, exclamation mark or ellipsis. A paragraph is a block of text separated from the next one by a blank line.
Is my text uploaded or stored?
No. Counting happens entirely in your browser as you type — your text is never sent to a server or saved by Jivora.
