Convert JPG to PNG

Nothing leaves your device

Choose a JPG above — the original and converted PNG will appear here with their exact file sizes.

How to use this converter

  1. Drop a JPG onto the upload box (or click to browse). The original dimensions are kept exactly — nothing is scaled.
  2. Watch it convert. The PNG is encoded in your browser within a second or two, no queue and no upload.
  3. Compare the sizes. Both files are shown side by side with exact bytes and the percentage change — PNG is usually larger, and the tool says so openly.
  4. Download the PNG, or press Choose another to convert a different file.

Useful information

JPG and PNG solve different problems. JPG throws away data you're unlikely to notice to make photos small. PNG keeps every pixel perfectly, which matters for screenshots, logos, line art and anything you'll edit repeatedly.

Why convert at all?

Three usual reasons: a platform or form refuses JPG, you're about to edit the image and want a format that survives repeated saves without compounding JPEG artifacts, or you need PNG's transparency support for the next step. The conversion itself adds no loss — the pixels in your JPG land in the PNG untouched.

Why the file gets bigger

A PNG re-encode of a photo is typically 2–5× the JPG size, because lossless compression can't discard the detail JPG already threw away. That's expected and the tool shows you the real numbers. If size is the priority and you don't need PNG, keep the original JPG.

What this tool won't do

It doesn't upscale, watermark, batch-process or re-compress at a different quality — it's a straight one-file format swap at original dimensions. For shrinking images, see the Image Compressor.

Privacy: the file is read and re-encoded on your device only. Nothing is transmitted or stored.

Frequently asked questions

How does the conversion work?

The JPG is drawn onto a canvas at its original size and re-encoded as a lossless PNG. There is no upload and no server: the whole conversion happens in this tab.

Will the PNG file be bigger?

Usually, yes. PNG is lossless while JPG is lossy, so the same photo takes more bytes as PNG — often noticeably more. The tool shows both sizes before you download so there are no surprises.

When should I convert JPG to PNG?

When you need lossless output for editing — repeated saves don't keep degrading the image — or when a tool or form insists on PNG. For sharing photos online, JPG or WebP is usually the lighter choice.

Does the conversion lose quality?

No new loss is added: the pixels you see in the JPG are copied exactly into the PNG. The conversion cannot recover detail the JPG already discarded, but it doesn't remove any more.

Is my image uploaded?

No. Reading, drawing and encoding all happen in your browser — the file never leaves your device, even with the internet disconnected.
